Doc, June 12, 2004 - A Trail Ride at the Olmstead!

Here is hubby with Breezy. Bob donned his cowboy hat for our ride today. Bob said it was funny...the song that popped into his head as we were loading up was a Beatles song..."Boy, you gotta carry that weight, carry that weight, a long time..." Such a little pony (14hh) with such a BIG burden! LOL!

The big wildlife thrill for the day was turkeys! Doc gave them a real good lookin' at before he continued down the trail. We were surrounded at one point. As you can see from the larger version of this picture, these turkeys weren't shy in the least!

I just love riding my big boy. Each time I am on him I am aware of the fact that this is a miracle that happened in response to the prayers of his friends on the internet. I also am keenly aware of the fact that the surgeon told me that we might only have one year of good trail riding before other joints begin to show signs of degeneration. :-( I will relish each ride.

In all fairness to Bob, I must say, Breezy has been and will continue to be a wonderful partner.

However, there ARE going to be times when Breezy will express an opinion of his own about things. The first hour of today's trail ride had been rigorous. This little pony had dutifully taken "Bobby Zebra Boy" up and down those hills with nary a complaint! When Bob took a detour and dismounted to take a picture and just left Breezy to stand on his own, however, Breezy couldn't resist doing what any decent, self-respecting horse would do.

Breezy, left to his own devices, wasted no time making for the fire road--the direction that would lead to the trailer and, he figured, home. He began to leave at a walk. Then that wasn't fast enough--he went to a jog. Doc and I went after him. I figured Breezy would stop when Doc was close. Forget that noise! LOL! Breezy began to CANTER!

Well, Doc thought the idea was grand! Bob and I had a full blown mutiny on our hands. Doc snake necked while I tried to convince him he needed to continue to pay attention to ME, his rider! Fortunately, he did not resort to "lightening his load" this time.

Remembering my days helping to move cattle, Doc and I backed away from Breezy and started to move quickly enough on a parallel course that we could circle out in front of him. Well, Breezy went as far as he could comfortably go...any farther, his tender joints would be pummeled by the asphalt of the fire road (he doesn't like walking on hard surfaces. If he went the only direction other than back to Bob, it meant navigating through a thick forest! Suddenly, Bob didn't look so bad to Breezy.

Doc and I snagged Breezy's lead and ponied him back to where Bob was snapping pictures.

Bob was aghast that his pony would abandon him...LOL! I figured, Breezy was being a horse. Bob said to Breezy upon his return, "Breezy! Aren't you having a good time?" LOL! We checked Breezy's saddle fit and all looked ok. He was wonderful for the entire 2.5 hour trail ride--except for that brief 10 minutes--and the terrain leveled out considerably.

Me and Mr. Green had to fetch and pony back "Old Reliable" who made a break for it! Bob took this image with a telephoto lens because of how far off in the distance we were! Breezy beat feet to get back to the trailer!
