1. Almost 8 years old (June 2006)
2. 1000 lbs. and 16.2hh
3. Before age 5, his hocks had advanced bone spavins. See his website by clicking here to see the entire story.
4. Shoes pulled in late January 2006. Farrier gave a pasture trim.
5. Early February, a natural trimmer gave Doc his first "set up" trim for a natural trim.
6. Doc went lame.
7. Because of pre-existing issues, we are unsure what Doc's problem is/are. Until his feet are comfortable,
we can't find out what other parts of his body may be causing him to suffer. He doesn't want to move very much.
8. Photographs provided on this page are not the best possible, but the best I could do at the time. His feet are a bit wet, thus the black coloring on the sole.
9. Doc's diet consists of orchard grass hay, 32 oz. daily beet pulp (untreated, shredded - no molasses), 16 oz daily alfalfa pellets, vitamin supplement designed to balance the nutrition deficiencies of
grass hay grown in the Central Valley of California, and for a week each month, psyllium to clean his gut of sand. He gets an occasional horse cookie.
Please keep in mind when viewing pictures and movies that Doc has had double hock surgery because of very advanced bone spavins in his hocks three years ago. His arthritis could be impacting his movement now, but until I get his feet comfortable I really have no idea how to evaluate (or have evaluated) whatever else is bothering him.
MOVIES:
As of today, May 18th, 2006, I did get pads to stay put on his feet (relatively) and I have a two and a half minute long video of Doc moving. It plays in Windows Movie Player. If it doesn't launch for you, right click and do a save target as and save it on your computer and then play it with Windows Movie.
